In this presentation, we will share and describe a digital science notebook for upper elementary students. Grounded in features of Universal Design for Learning, the digital notebook can support engagement, representation, and action & expression (CAST, 2018). It can open the curriculum for students to use their full linguistic repertoires through multimodal opportunities to share their thinking. Using Google Slides, the notebook can be easily accessed and shared by students using Chromebooks. We will describe how teachers can set up the notebooks and can simplify instruction on how to use them. We will share an example notebook template based on a well-known science curriculum and a general notebook template that can be used across curricular programs. Finally, insights from preservice teachers who created their own notebooks (Authors, 2024) and some preliminary themes from a study with an elementary teacher will be shared.
